Is Sleep talking
a normal behavior?

Anyone may experience sleep talking, as it is a common sleeping phenomenon that is more prevalent in males and children. Sleep talking may affect your partner or family members, but from a scientific point of view, occasional sleep talking is not health detrimental and is nothing to worry about. However, sleep talking is often related to other sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, and sleepwalking. If these occur, you may need to treat the above sleep disorders as soon as possible.

Why does sleep talking occur?

The reason for sleep talking involves many possibilities, including genetics, daily stress, low moods swings (depression), tiredness, alcoholism or fever. You can try the following suggestions to help reduce the frequency and severity of sleep talking: regular work and rest, adequate sleep, healthy diet, staying relaxed and avoiding alcohol. If the situation does not improve and persists over a long time, daily life and sleep quality can become severely affected. This may lead to other symptoms such as daytime sleepiness, lack of energy, memory loss, or slow response. You should consult a doctor for professional advice.

Will sleep talking reveal my secrets?

Many people are deeply convinced that sleep talking reveals the subconscious truth, so they seek to eavesdrop on other people's thoughts and secrets.  Countless people are unaware of their sleep talking behavior or speech, and the voice and language during dreams may even be different compared with their normal conscious state. The content may be complex dialogues or monologues, complete nonsense gibberish, or lingering emotions related to past events. However, no matter what you hear, according to modern sleep science and the law, it is believed that sleep talking is not a product of conscious or rational thought. Therefore, the contents of dreams are usually not accepted in court.  So you don't need to worry too much sleep talking revealing your secrets.

Is my sleep talking serious?

Sleep talking can occur at any stage of the sleep cycle.  In the first and second stages (entering sleep and light sleep stage), sleep talking may be full dialogues, and words may be coherent.  Upon entering the third and fourth stages (deep sleep stage), the content may be limited to groans and gibberish.

If you feel that your sleep talking has reached a critical level, and even encompasses intense fear, screaming or violent behaviour, please consult a doctor as soon as possible. The doctor may suggest that you set up a sleep schedule of no less than 7 hours of sleep per night.  In rare cases, medication may be needed to help reduce sleep talking.
